ASU CALIFORNIA CENTER BROADWAY

Sustainability can no longer be mandated. It can no longer be siloed. It’s not just about doing less harm—it’s about doing things differently from the ground up. At the 2025 Sourcing Journal LA Sustainability Summit, we’ll explore how innovation is driving a complete rethinking of the fashion, textile and denim industries.

From radical material breakthroughs to tech-powered efficiencies, from closed-loop models to radical transparency, the summit will spotlight the companies and ideas reshaping the way products are designed, sourced, produced and delivered.

Join us as we uncover a new way of thinking—and a new path forward.

What They Are Saying About SJ’s Sustainability Summits

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

It’s good to be back.

Last year, the team at Sourcing Journal took our annual Sustainability Summit to the West Coast for the first time. That sojourn proved to be fruitful in myriad ways.

We got to connect with our peers that we don’t often see face to face, we spotlighted voices that graced our stage for the first time, and we did so in an atmosphere that was friendly, engaged and open-minded. Personally, I can’t wait to do it again.

This year’s theme, “A New Way of Thinking,” has numerous meanings. First, and most obviously, it calls out the constant innovation in the sustainability space that is improving by leaps and bounds with each season. But, on a deeper level, it sparks the conversation of how to proceed when the headwinds are fierce. From government program cuts to corporate pullbacks to stalled or neutered global legislation, this is not an easy time to be fighting for change. Winning this battle will require fresh ideas, a willingness to be nimble and the desire we all have to improve how our industry affects the world.

Addressing the need for new solutions, we will spotlight serious research with the scientists and educators who are doing the work behind the scenes that will fuel the better products and procedures of the future.

Bringing the pages of SJ Denim to life, we are once again giving the blue its due with representatives from numerous labels taking the stage. As the home of U.S.-made denim, LA is the perfect venue to have these conversations.

California is also on the forefront of legislative change, and the progress being made in that arena will be in focus, as well. From EPR to circularity, there’s a lot to cover, and we’ll be discussing where laws stand and what they might mean for the industry beyond state lines.

We will also again be bestowing the Baker Tilly Fashion Innovator Award to a deserving, eco-friendly company that marries style with sustainability. Be there to find out who we are honoring!

Recognizing that we all have a lot to learn from each other, we’re gathering great people and curating an agenda that will leave you with valuable takeaways and contacts so you can return to your company ready to make the uphill climb toward change. Can’t wait to see you there.

TOPICS

For decades, the industry has leaned on overseas production, but shipping
samples and goods across the globe comes with a significant environmental
cost. Bringing manufacturing back to the Western Hemisphere could drive
greater flexibility, enable closer demand response and reduce fashion’s
transportation impact. Hear what it will take to make these supply chain
shifts and how companies are achieving sustainable results through
nearshoring.

There is no shortage of secondhand inventory, but tapping into this resource
for resale has typically required manual labor for sorting and listing.
Discover how artificial intelligence is helping to process post-consumer
garments more efficiently so more merchandise can have a second life.

Within the U.S., California continues to lead the way in sustainability
legislation. In 2024, the state passed the landmark SB 707 Responsible
Textile Recovery Act, mandating the reuse and recycling of used textiles,
and it is not stopping there. The Fashion Environmental Accountability Act
(AB 405), introduced earlier this year, would hold companies accountable
for their emissions and toxic chemical footprints. Find out what’s next and
what to expect in the Golden State’s legislative landscape.

Material innovations hold promise to create textiles that are less impactful
toward the planet, people and animals. Yet transitioning these novel fibers
and inputs from R&D to retail-ready collections takes collaboration across
the value chain. Hear how next-gen material makers are scaling up their
creations, including how they are overcoming hurdles in the path to
commercialization.

Within the wider apparel industry, denim manufacturers and brands stand
out for their pioneering use of sustainable production methods. Mills were
early adopters of recycled cotton, they are heavily focused on water
conservation and they are investing in R&D to test alternative dyes,
chemicals and more. In this talk, denim producers will reflect on their
sustainable progress and the next targets for innovation.
